A first for Hooked on Hooks is a coat rack made from a sumptuous piece of kiln-dried American cherry. Looking very sorry for itself in a local timber yard, because I've had to repair surface 'tear-out', I'm listing it as reclaimed or recycled wood. As smooth as skin to the touch, to add even more character to the gorgeous cherry grain, which also shows interesting pockets of sap, I've done much of the repair work with a restorer's gold paste. Photographs can never tell the whole story but the result is really quirky but subtle, especially combined with the raw metal of the hooks. The beautiful muted finish was produced with Satin-finish Osmo PolyX Hard Wax Oil. This is a very high quality finish that is so hard-wearing it is commonly used for floors, as well as furniture. (For aesthetic reasons, the rack attaches to the wall by means of two screws hidden beneath the first and last hooks).
Contrasting beautifully with the pale cherry tones is a traditional cast iron hat & coat hook designed by Archibald Kenrick (1760-1835). These are waxed to protect the metal and to enhance the look of the raw iron. Gorgeous...
